The main roads on the Island are generally high quality and maintained to a high standard.
Do remember though, that due to the geography of the Island most roads are not smooth and flat – in fact the only dual carriageway on the entire Island is a short stretch in Newport running past the hospital.
Some roads are VERY steep (especially those leading to beaches in the south of the Island (for example, Ventnor).
Island roads can be very twisty – and most do not have significant safety edging so please take care, especially when driving across the Downs or on roads with a steep drop on the side. Views are incredible on these roads but do pull over into a passing or viewing bay if you wish to take in the sights!
To see the Island in all its beauty, why not leave the car behind and tour the slow way (https://www.visitisleofwight.co.uk/things-to-do/slow-travel-guide) or hop on an Island Breezer (https://www.islandbuses.info/days-out-bus)?
